Learn Bass Guitar in Sydney

As a guitar teacher, I’d like to strongly urge you not to learn the guitar. Learn bass guitar instead!

What’s the difference? The guitar has six strings, but the bass only has four so it’s easier for a start. The strings are thicker, have a lower sound, and you can really feel it when you’re playing along with songs. It’s an amazingly fun instrument to play.

Two of my long time bass students have just had to stop, as they’re doing their HSC. Apparently it starts in Term 4 of Year 11 these days.

That means there’s a vacancy for someone else who wants to try the instrument. This is open to people of all ages. At the moment, my youngest bass student is eleven and my oldest is fifty-two. So if you’ve always wanted to learn bass guitar, now’s your chance.

I’ve been mainly a guitar teacher over the years, but I was surprised to find out what a great instrument the bass is. No matter what your taste in music, there’s so much good material. In the rock genre, some recent bass songs I’ve done are by a variety of artists: Kate Bush, Post Malone, Black Sabbath, Billie Eilish, Metallica, The Clash, Taylor Swift, and Radiohead just to name a few.

Like me, I think you’ll be surprised at how satisfying it is to play bass guitar. It is really the hidden jewel among musical instruments.

Beginners can start playing songs right away. For more experienced players, we’ll get deeper into the bass repertoire. We’ll also look at the theory of how bass works, and learn to make your own bass lines or improvise.

If you’ve been playing for a while but don’t necessarily want lessons, I can also do a one off consultation to assess the current state of your bass playing and how you can improve it.

So, if you want to learn bass guitar in Sydney, now’s your chance. Lessons are held in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. For those who live further away, online lessons may also be available via Zoom.
